Surgical Site Infections: Practical Prevention and Management in the Clinical Setting

The first half of this lecture will review surgical site infections in general, along with their diagnosis and overall treatment. Discussion on risk factors associated with SSI, as a basis for prevention strategies and outline these prevention techniques can help the small animal practitioner reduce the risk of SSI in their own clinic population.
The second half of this lecture will review historical practices of SSI prevention and introduce specific new techniques and products used in surgeon and patient preparation today. Review best practices for reducing contamination risk and debunk commonly believed practices. Further discussion of step-by-step procedures for ensuring surgeon sterility and reducing contamination of the patient.
